Kratom is a tropical tree found in South Eastern Asian countries such as Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia. It is a tree that grows 30 feet tall and 15 feet wide with unexpectedly big leaves that contain a variety of alkaloids. The plant belongs to the coffee family and shares a few properties including the bitter taste and its ability to boost energy. Over the years the leaves have been used by workers in Malaysia and Thailand as it provides a boost of energy, helping them work for longer hours without getting tired. When taken in appropriate doses, some strains of kratom can also have a very relaxing and calming effect, especially the red strain.
There are unique chemical compounds found in the leaves that make it quite beneficial for medicinal purposes rather than simply the recreational ones. The alkaloids present in the leaves affects our bodies positively to a great extent. Other then causing a calming and soothing effect while uplifting your mood, kratom also has analgesic properties and therefore can act as a good pain reliever. Kratom also has a major impact on the body’s immune system and works by improving it to a great extent. It can act as a fertility booster as well because when you consume kratom there is an increased supply of bloodflow to the reproductive organs. In addition, kratom can even act as a great soother, reducing anxiety and mood swings.
There are different ways to take kratom. One is to simply remove the stringy central vein and chew the kratom leaves fresh. Dried leaves can either be consumed in the form of whole leaves or crushed into a powder. Once it is made into a powder, it can be easily mixed with water or even in your morning cup of coffee. Dried leaves can also be brewed in the form of tea by boiling the leaves in water. Another very common form that is used to consume kratom is smoking or vaporizing. In this form, the leaves are dried up, rolled in paper or put into a vaporizer, and smoked. However you chose to take your kratom, appropriate dosage is very important and it greatly depends on the body weight and tolerance of an individual as well. Instead of indulging in high doses, always start low and work up from there. Ideally a beginner should start with 2-3 grams and increase by 0.5 grams after every use thereafter. At a low dose, kratom will stay in the body for about 2 hours, with the effects gradually disseminating. But when the dosage is increased by 7-8 grams, the drug and its effects can last up to 6-8 hours in the body. One should be very careful while using kratom in such high doses.
It is advised to consume kratom on an empty stomach because doing so will allow the effects to occur faster, as soon as 20-40 mins after consumption. But if it is consumed when you are full or have food in your stomach, the potential effects occur only after 60-90 minutes. It is very important to maintain ideal dosage otherwise it might cause certain side effects like sedation, loss of appetite, dry mouth and constipation to name a few. Hence it is very important to ensure that one does not abuse the substance.
