Kratom is a plant from the coffee family originally from Southeast Asia. It is currently being sold online, in marijuana dispensaries, convenience stores and smoke shops. It has been consumed for hundreds of years, but it has recently become popular in the United States.
A recent article published in The Daily Astorian talks about the plant, poison control, help for illness, and its legality. I have summed up the main points here.
The pain community have pointed the lack of prescription drug availability as a reason for the kratom boom. Recreational users are touted it as an alternative to more powerful opiates.
There have been reported cases to CDC, but they’re speculated to be caused to the use of higher doses than typical recommended.
Kratom has been noted as a giant help for the pain community and they strongly defend this plant. The American Kratom Association is also known for defending kratom and its medicinal purposes.
A final note on kratom’s current usage as both recreational and medicinal by Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis:
The plant is considered a drug by law enforcement. Like being under the influence of Benadryl or a high-caffeine drink, drivers can be charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants if it is determined that kratom affected their abilities to operate a vehicle.
