Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a psychoactive plant with a long list of uses and benefits. In the last decade, Kratom has gained users worldwide. It is commonly used as a recreational drug and will result in narcotic-resembling effects. But in the early years, Kratom was used as a traditional medicine in Thailand, Malaysia, Bali, and other countries in the Southeast Asia.
Today you can find a number of kratom forms online. Some are selling it raw, dried, powdered form, paste, and so much more. The most common practice is to eat Kratom raw. Because of its popularity, we might wonder how safe Kratom is. People say that it can help improve our mood. Does it affect our serotonin levels?
Kratom for Medical Purposes.
In folk medicine, Thai used to ingest Kratom to treat diarrhea. Other countries use this to intensify sexual desire and performance. Today, Kratom is still used for medical reasons. Some of it may include:
An alternative to Opiates. In Southeast Asia, Kratom is used as an opium substitute. The Mitragynine is used to slowly wean off a user from narcotics. After a few days, the addict would successfully stop the use of narcotics. This is also used as a maintenance substance for narcotic addicts.
Used for Anxiety and Improve Mood. Serotonin is one of the chemicals that affect our mood. Antidepressants have a great influence on the brain’s chemical activity. The effects of serotonin are mild when compared to other opiates and dopamine. Kratom acts on the serotonin levels since it is not addictive. Kratom is believed to affect our moods, but still, there are no studies to back it up just yet.
Attention Deficit Disorder. There are claims that kratom can be used to treat ADD or attention deficit disorder. However, there are little studies conducted on this theory that it is not proven to be correct yet. Some believe that Kratom mood-altering effects are effective in treating ADD.
Natural Stimulant. Kratom was used as a traditional stimulant by Thai laborers for increased productivity. It naturally stimulates the body to increase the physical activity. They just crush and chew Kratom leaves a couple of times a day to get these results.
For Recreational use. For years, Kratom has been on the top list of recreational drugs because of how it mimics the narcotic effects. It is not as harmful as the illegal drugs that’s why it is the best substitute for narcotics. It’s also not that addictive and it is also legal in most countries including the United States.
Most users describe the effects as “euphoric and stimulating,” while others think that its calming effects are pretty dominant. Though it is not a secret that Kratom acts as a stimulant in low doses, and as a sedative in higher dosage. Some report side effects such as nausea and headaches after using Kratom. Now you must understand that nausea is a clear sign that you have taken too much of Kratom. Negative effects will just disappear after awhile. And these rarely occur when you take Kratom responsibly.
